Want to watch movies from your own DVD library on your iPod? With Instant Handbrake, free software for Mac OSX, you can easily make any DVD into an iTunes-compatible movie.
1. Launch Instant Handbrake.
2. Select your DVD source.
3. Insert your DVD. You may need to stop the auto-play.
4. Hit “Continue” in Instant Handbrake. It will begin to scan your DVD.
5. Select the file you want to convert. For full-length movies, this will be the file with the longest duration. For DVDs of TV Shows, please refer to the “Tips” section.
6. Select where you want the converted files to be saved to. It’s a good idea to save it to your “Movies” folder in Mac OSX.
7. For the rest of the options on this screen, select H.264 for the “File Format,” and for the “Picture Format” select “Original.” This will preserve the picture format (wide or full screen) that’s on the DVD.
8. Hit “Convert.” The movie will now be converted and saved to the folder you indicated in step six.
9. Launch iTunes.
10. Navigate to the folder your movie is saved in and drag the MP4 file into the iTunes Movie Folder.
11. Hook up your iPod and sych up – or if you manually transfer from iTunes to your iPod, drag the movie on to your iPod. Now you’re ready to enjoy your movie on the go!Tips & Warnings
- If you have a DVD of TV shows, it’s recommended that you export each individual show. DVD’s have a “Play All” feature, which is all the episodes jammed into one file, this will be the longest duration in the list of files you get in step 5.
- You can also export to PSP format if you’ve got one of those. H.264 is the best quality format for iPod.
- Handbrake is a more robust version of Instant Handbrake. The program offers more options, but the concept is the same. This will work on Windows and Linux as well as Mac OSX
- Copy protection may prevent DVDs from being converted to iPod format.

Apple unveiled its new iPad yesterday, an iPhone OS-based slate tablet computer capable of running “almost all” of the apps available in the App Store, as well as new apps tailored specifically for the device.
Jan 28, 2010
The iPad physically resembles an oversized iPod touch, with a 9.7-inch, 1024-by-768-pixel screen dominating the front and a black bezel surrounding it. The back is made from a solid piece of aluminum, with a 30-pin dock connector and speaker on the bottom, and volume, sleep/wake, and headphone ports around the other sides.
“iPad is our most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “iPad creates and defines an entirely new category of devices that will connect users with their apps and content in a much more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
The iPad, on the other hand, is made for the consumption of digital media: games, music, photos, videos, magazines, news papers and e-books. Sure you can use it to check your email or work on a keynote, but the iPad’s primary purpose is to help you consume the ever-expanding amount of digital content on offer.
So in many ways, today is a brand new day for content creators and owners alike. For if we’re smart, all of us — from large media giants such as Fox to upstarts like my little company — will figure out how to build a new magazine/news experience that leverages the iPad’s powerful processor, great graphics, stunning display and most importantly, Internet connection. In fact I’ll go out on a limb and say that today may be the day we start to rethink how we build web sites. Here we offer a full rundown of the iPad’s features:

The Top 10 Highlights:
* There is one single button on the entire device, which I think is just brilliant because it means fewer distractions.
* There’s a sleep/wake button at the top, much like the iPhone.
* There’s a headphone jack.
* I like how the device switches from landscape to portrait mode so quickly in all four orientations.
* The web browsing experience is easy and satisfying, thanks to an ultra-responsive touchscreen.
* The Maps application is pretty stunning, especially the street view, which comes alive on the iPad screen like never before.
* YouTube works as advertised, including the HD videos. It’s a damn shame there isn’t an iPad version of Hulu.
* The iTunes store and iTunes Video work very well, and the music buying experience is no different than, say, on a Mac.
* It’s simple enough to plow through a whole bunch of email very very quickly.
* iPhoto is a much better experience on the iPad than you would imagine, especially the slideshows.
Something maybe you don’t like:
*The screen resolution of 1024 X 768, or about 4:3, is underwhelming.
- *There’s no way to lock the device into either portrait or landscape mode.
- *The decision to work with AT&T for a wireless 3G data is just straight-up dumb. It’s not like Apple doesn’t know how bad the performance of the AT&T network is.
- Additional facts:
The device will work with any Bluetooth keyboard, but not with a Bluetooth mouse. The keyboard dock for the device will cost about $69. A case/stand is going to cost $39.

As the new iPad was announced by Apple today during the live Apple press conference in San Francisco, it was made known that one of the programs that the iPad comes with is iBooks, which will enable iPad users to buy, download and read books electronically. Immediately, Internet went into a heated discussion over whether iPad will kill Amazon’s e-reader Kindle. Right now, it seems the net is divided into those who think Kindle will be subdued by iPad and those who think Kindle will survive. Here’s a simple feature-by-feature comparison chart just to make things easier.

Apple founder Steve Jobs said: “Now Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this… we’re going to stand on their shoulders for this. Our new app is called iBooks.” Whether Apple’s New Product will make eReaders obsolete or not is still in the wonder.

Fortunately, there are already ways to get GPS going on my 1st gen, and here’s another one. The G-Fi is a little box that will add GPS to your first generation iPhone or iPod touch. Unfortunately, this one is probably a little too hardcore for me — it creates a mobile wireless point that will spin out GPS locations to any number of devices in the area, up to 200 total. The catch: it requires a specific app called Navmii, selling in the App Store now for $33. That’s in addition to the little box itself, which is $100.
Unfortunately, while this might work for a large number of roaming devices, it’s way more than I need. A single unit add-on like the Magellan kit works with any app that uses GPS and will probably cost less, too. But if this one floats your boat (maybe you have a fleet of bounty hunters rocking 1st gen iPhones who need GPS to track down crooks together?), you can pick it up right now.

So many video file formats, so many handheld video players, so many online video sites, and so little time. To have your favorite clips how you want them—whether that’s on your DVR, iPod, PSP or desktop—you need the right utility to convert ‘em into the format that works for you. Commercial video converter software’s aplenty, but there are several solid free utilities that can convert your video files on every operating system, or if you’ve just got a web browser and a quick clip. Put DVDs on your iPod, YouTube videos on DVD, or convert any video file with today’s top 10 free video converters, video editors and DVD converters.
10. VLC media player (Open source/All platforms)
Ok, so VLC is a media player, not converter, but if you’re watching digital video, it’s a must-have—plus VLC can indeed rip DVD’s, as well as play ripped discs in ISO format (no actual optical media required.) VLC can also play FLV files downloaded from YouTube et al, no conversion to AVI required. Since there’s a portable version, VLC’s a nice choice for getting your DVD rips/saved YouTube video watching on wherever you go.
9. MediaCoder (Open source/Windows)
Batch convert audio and video compression formats with the open source Media Coder for Windows, which works with a long laundry lists of formats, including MP3, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, AAC+, AAC+V2, MusePack, WMA, RealAudio, AVI, MPEG/VOB, Matroska, MP4, RealMedia, ASF/WMV, Quicktime, and OGM, to name a few.
8. Avi2Dvd (Freeware/Windows)
Make your video files burnable to a DVD with Avi2Dvd, a utility that converts Avi/Ogm/Mkv/Wmv/Dvd files to Dvd/Svcd/Vcd format. Avi2Dvd can also produce DVD menus with chapter, audio, and subtitle buttons.

Upload your video to Hey!Watch to encode it into a wide variety of file formats, like H264, MP4, WMV, DivX, HD Video, Mobile 3GP/MP4, iPod, Archos and PSP. Hey!Watch only allows for 10MB of video uploads per month for free, and from there you pay for what you use, but it’s got lots of neat features for video publishers like podcast feed generation and automatic batch processing with options you set once.
4. VidDownloader (webapp)
When you don’t want to mess with installing software to grab that priceless YouTube clip before it gets yanked, head over to web site VidDownloader which sucks in videos from all the big streaming sites (YouTube, Google Video, iFilm, Blip.TV, DailyMotion, etc.), converts ‘em for you to a playable format and offers them for download. Other downloaders for online video sites buy you a Flash FLV file, but VidDownloader spits back an AVI file.
